1. Selecting a Maternity Photographer That Fits Your Style?

Do you like the outdoors, surrounded by nature?  Would you like to shoot somewhere more intimate, maybe in your home?  These are things that you should should know before you start searching for a photographer.  Not every photographer has the same style or emote the same feelings in their images.  Some maternity photographers like to shoot with natural sunlight, some may use studio lighting, while others are able to use both.  A great place to start is to visit Pinterest and to find looks that resonate with your style.   I shoot with both studio lighting and natural sunlight and enjoy creating different backdrops for each client.  One of my favorite looks is creating the fashion editorial and fine art style shooting exclusively indoors in my studio.

2. Is Maternity Photography Their Specialty?

When looking for a photographer, many times you’ll discover that not only do they shoot maternity, but they photograph various other genres as well.  From weddings to high school senior portraits, they seem to do it all.  Why work with a photographer specializing in one genre?  It’s like how the saying goes, “Jack of all trades, but a Master of none.”  If you’re going to buy the best wedding cake in your town, would you prefer to hire a dedicated bakery where they specialize in cake making?  Or are you going to go to your local market? Hiring a maternity photographer can help you provide a professional and tailored experience for your maternity photoshoot.

3. Do You Like Your Maternity Photographer?

This is something that I used to tell my clients back when I worked as a wedding photographer.  The inquiry process should be a way for you to see if the person that you’re going to be working with, is a good fit personality-wise.  Think about it, it’s not just going to be for the 1-3hrs that you’ll be shooting with your chosen photographer, but also all the correspondence back and forth that takes place before and after the shoot.  If you don’t get along with your photographer, you’re not going to enjoy the experience.  Having a  consultation call or ZOOM call [it’s 2021, video chat is a thing now] will allow you to know your maternity photographer.  Consider it being a relaxed and casual job interview and make sure you’re comfortable with the personality of the photographer.
