Our GlamSquad: Interview w/Christina
Let's give a warm welcome to Christina - a magician behind the makeup brush and an essential part of Motherly Portraits’ GLAMSQUAD. Her business, MakeMeUp by Christina Kaian, is a 2X Best of Rhode Island winner and her skillful hands and sharp eye for detail are sure to leave you feeling like the most stunning version of yourself. In this interview, I ask Christina what inspired her to become one of the leading makeup businesses in Rhode Island and what she likes most about doing makeup for maternity and motherhood photoshoots!
Antonio: What inspired you to pursue a career in makeup artistry?
Christina: At the age of 19, while I was in college, I was working part-time at a department store; when one day the cosmetics manager approached me and thought that I would be the perfect fit for a beauty consultant position at a well-known cosmetics brand within the store. Not knowing anything about makeup, I said “Sure, I will give it a shot”. The rest is history. I gained all the experience and knowledge, and it quickly became a passion; so I started my own business years later. I love helping people feel their best. As a makeup artist, I have helped people feel their most beautiful and confident on the most important days of their lives and that’s so rewarding.
Antonio: You’ve probably seen a lot of different styles and looks in cosmetics, what is your favorite makeup look to create and why?
Christina: I love a soft glam look; neutral eyeshadow shades, pale-blush lips, and gorgeous glowing skin! It’s a timeless look that enhances a client’s natural beauty.
Antonio: And with all the different techniques and products in cosmetics industry, how do you stay current with the latest makeup trends and techniques?
Christina: Social media helps a lot with this! Following top beauty brands helps me to keep up with the trends in the beauty industry. In addition, I have found some amazing talented artists that I look up to and have connected with. A lot of them offer one-on-one classes and/or online training; and I believe there is always something new to be learned and education is key!
Antonio: Can you share a time when you faced a challenging makeup situation, and how did you overcome it?
Christina: As makeup artists, there will be times during our career that we realize that we cannot make everyone happy. Of course, as an artist and people pleaser, I want everyone to be in love with their look but the reality is that you can’t please everyone and you have to tell yourself that it’s okay. I may not be the right artist for every single person but that’s what makes the industry so special; there is a lot of artists with different makeup styles so there is someone for everyone!
Antonio: What do you like most about doing makeup for maternity and motherhood photoshoots?
Christina: I LOVE connecting and getting to know the mama’s and mama’s to be! As someone who has gotten my maternity photos taken and knowing how empowering it was; I love being able to hype them up and get them ready for an incredible shoot. A maternity and motherhood session celebrates the mama and mama’s to be and all the amazing accomplishments their bodies can attain. It is so amazing to be able to look back on the photos and say, “wow, I look so beautiful and I can’t believe that’s me and my baby and I can’t believe my body grew a human”; to be a part of these once in a lifetime photos/memories and to make them feel confident and beautiful is so special.
