Not Sure What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot? Start Here.

Let’s be honest — growing a human baby is hard work. And on the days when even putting on socks feels like a workout, figuring out what to wear for your maternity photoshoot can feel… overwhelming. If you’ve found yourself standing in front of your closet thinking, "Nothing fits, and I don’t know what looks good anymore," — take a deep breath. You're not alone. And this blog is here to help. I’m breaking down a few tried-and-true tips we give our clients at Motherly Portraits to help you feel comfortable, beautiful, and (dare I say it?) like a fashion icon — even if you don’t feel like one walking in.

Pick Pieces That Hug the Bump?

The star of the show? That beautiful baby bump!

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your fourth, we always recommend outfits that highlight and flatter your shape. Think fitted dresses, wrap styles, or bodysuits that follow your curves.

If you're coming to our studio, we’ve got a whole closet curated just for this — but even if you're styling from home, aim for something that cinches under the bust or gently hugs the bump without squeezing.

Loose or boxy pieces tend to hide your shape, and trust me — this is the moment to let it shine.

Think Texture, Not Busy Patterns

  • Bold floral patterns? Bright polka dots? Probably best left for brunch.

  • For maternity photos, textures like lace, satin, ribbed knits and chiffon give a subtle elegance that photographs beautifully without distracting from you. Patterns can quickly become overwhelming on camera (and sometimes clash with our backdrops or lighting), while textured solids add dimension and visual interest.

Go for Soft Neutrals or Bold Solids

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to maternity style. Some moms love the look of a bare belly with a robe draped open or a bandeau-and-skirt combo. Others feel most confident fully covered in a flowing dress or structured bodysuit.

At the studio, we offer both vibes — and we build your shoot around what makes you feel empowered. Want to try both? We’re here for it. We’ve got changing areas, layering pieces, and time set aside to explore multiple looks.

It’s the Little Things That Elevate the Look

Don’t forget the finishing touches. Here’s a quick checklist our clients love:

  • Nails: Natural or neutral polish works great — nothing too busy

  • Undergarments: Think strapless bras, seamless underwear, nipple covers — we’ll guide you on this

  • Accessories: Statement earrings, delicate necklaces, dainty rings — just don’t overdo it

Oh, and yes — we have double-sided tape and fashion clips ready. (We’re basically your glam squad + best friend + creative director all in one.)

Feeling Overwhelmed? Let’s Make It Easy.

We get it — being pregnant comes with a million decisions. Choosing outfits for your maternity session shouldn’t be one of the stressful ones.

At Motherly Portraits, our client closet is stocked with hand-selected pieces that flatter, photograph beautifully, and make you feel like your best self. You don’t need to bring anything (unless you want to). We even offer a personal wardrobe consultation before your shoot to make sure every detail is covered.
